What is the maximum efficiency with which photosynthesis can convert solar energy into biomass?

چکیده
Photosynthesis is the source of our food and fiber. Increasing world population, economic development, and diminishing land resources forecast that a doubling of productivity is critical in meeting agricultural demand before the end of this century. A starting point for evaluating the global potential to meet this goal is establishing the maximum efficiency of photosynthetic solar energy conversion. The potential efficiency of each step of the photosynthetic process from light capture to carbohydrate synthesis is examined. This reveals the maximum conversion efficiency of solar energy to biomass is 4.6% for C3 photosynthesis at 30 degrees C and today's 380 ppm atmospheric [CO2], but 6% for C4 photosynthesis. This advantage over C3 will disappear as atmospheric [CO2] nears 700 ppm.

Today, due to qualitative growth and scientific advances, energy, especially electricity is increasingly needed by human society. One of the almost endless and pure energy which have been paid attention over the years is the solar energy. Solar cells directly convert solar energy into electrical energy and are one of the main blocks of photovoltaic systems. Significant improvement has been made...
متن کاملHybrid photosynthesis-powering biocatalysts with solar energy captured by inorganic devices
The biological reduction of CO2 driven by sunlight via photosynthesis is a crucial process for life on earth. However, the conversion efficiency of solar energy to biomass by natural photosynthesis is low. This translates in bioproduction processes relying on natural photosynthesis that are inefficient energetically. Recently, hybrid photosynthetic technologies with the potential of significant...

What Is Productivity? In primary productivity of plants, solar energy is transformed to biomass. Using photosynthesis, green plants convert solar energy, carbon dioxide, and water to glucose and other carbon-based compounds and eventually to plant tissue. Gross primary productivity is the product of that photosynthetic fixation of carbon, whereas net primary productivity is the carbon that is a...
متن کاملThe theoretical limit to plant productivity.
Human population and economic growth are accelerating the demand for plant biomass to provide food, fuel, and fiber. The annual increment of biomass to meet these needs is quantified as net primary production (NPP). Here we show that an underlying assumption in some current models may lead to underestimates of the potential production from managed landscapes, particularly of bioenergy crops tha...
متن کاملA thermodynamic model for exergetic performance and optimization of a solar and biomass-fuelled multigeneration system
Integrated energy systems utilizing renewable sources are sustainable and environmentally substitutes for conventional fossil-fired energy systems. A new multigeneration plant with two inputs, such as biomass and solar energy, and four useful outputs, such as cooling, heating, power, and distilled water, is presented and investigated in this paper. The proposed system includes evacuated tub...
